With the writers’ strike now resolved, numerous projects are poised to resume development, including the much-anticipated new X-Men movie.
According to a recent report from Deadline, Marvel Studios executives will begin scheduling meetings to identify a writer for this upcoming project in the fall. The report suggests that there’s no immediate rush to secure a writer for this highly coveted role, and a decision is likely to be reached around the beginning of 2024.
While the announcement of a “movie searching for writers” may not initially appear significant, it marks the first substantial piece of development news concerning a brand-new X-Men film since Disney’s acquisition of Fox, along with all its Marvel assets, back in 2019. Although we’ve glimpsed characters like Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in last year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and anticipate Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in the upcoming Deadpool 3, details have been sparse regarding a completely fresh X-Men cinematic installment.
It’s not unexpected that Disney is keen to reinvest in the X-Men franchise, considering its long-standing profitability under 20th Century Fox. Beginning with the 2000 release of X-Men, the studio delivered six X-Men movies, a trilogy centered on Wolverine, and two Deadpool films. However, two X-Men-related productions that were in development during the Fox era and distributed post-Disney acquisition—Dark Phoenix and New Mutants—faced limited success. Consequently, it’s clear that Disney is inclined to undertake a bit of revitalization.
Meanwhile, Deadpool 3 remains highly anticipated and had progressed well into production before the writers’ strike hit in May. However, filming had to be suspended when SAG-AFTRA initiated a strike. The film had been aiming for a May 2024 release, but its fate will hinge on the outcome of negotiations between Hollywood’s studios and actors, which are set to resume next Monday.
